Production Description
The Socket Weld Fitting is a type of forged pipe fitting designed to be socket welded onto the ends of pipes or other fittings, creating a secure and leak-proof connection in high-pressure piping systems.
Our socket weld fittings are available in various types, such as socket weld tees, crosses, couplings, nipples, unions, and 90 elbow outlets. These fittings are made from stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, and super duplex stainless steel. They are available in different pressure ratings, including 3000lbs, 6000lbs, and 9000lbs.
At RAYOUNG, we manufacture a comprehensive range of Socket Weld Pipe Fittings designed for high-pressure industrial applications. Unlike buttweld fittings, socket weld fittings are primarily used for small pipe diameters (typically NPS 4 and smaller). These fittings feature a recessed area (the socket) where the pipe is inserted before being fillet welded, providing superior leak-proof integrity and structural strength.
Our forged socket weld fittings are produced in strict accordance with ASME B16.11, ensuring seamless integration into your high-pressure piping networks.

Our Socket Weld fittings Available Range:
We provide a full line of forged fittings to ensure a complete piping solution:
1. Socket Weld Elbows (90° & 45°)
Designed to change the flow direction. The internal socket design ensures smooth flow and reduces the risk of turbulence compared to threaded alternatives. They are manufactured through forging processes and are available in both long radius (LR) and short radius (SR) models. The LR model has a radius of 1.5 times the outer diameter (OD), while the SR model has a radius of 1 times the OD. Socket weld elbows are commonly used in pipelines to change the direction of fluid flow.

2. Socket Weld Tees (Equal & Reducing)
Used for branching a pipeline. We offer both straight tees and reducing tees to accommodate different pipe diameters within a single system.
3. Socket Weld Couplings (Full & Half)
The most reliable way to join two pipe lengths. Full couplings connect pipe to pipe, while half couplings are often used for vessel or header attachments.
4. Socket Weld Unions
Essential for systems requiring periodic maintenance or dismantling. Our MSS SP-83 compliant unions provide a tight metal-to-metal seal.
5. Socket Weld Caps & Crosses
Caps are used for dead-ending a pipe run, while crosses allow for four-way distribution in complex manifolds.

Socket Weld (SW) vs. Butt Weld (BW) Fittings
| Feature | Socket Weld (SW) Fittings | Buttweld (BW) Fittings |
| Standard | ASME B16.11 | ASME B16.9 |
| Typical Size Range | Mainly Small Bore (NPS 1/8″ to 4″) | Full Range (NPS 1/2″ to 72″+) |
| Connection Method | Pipe is inserted into a recessed area (socket) and fillet welded. | Pipe and fitting are aligned end-to-end and butt-welded. |
| End Preparation | Square cut ends. No beveling required; easy alignment. | Beveled ends (typically 37.5°). Requires precision alignment. |
| Structural Strength | Moderate (approx. 50% strength of BW). Higher risk of stress at the weld. | Maximum. Weld joint is as strong as or stronger than the base metal. |
| Fluid Flow | Discontinuity at the socket can cause turbulence and “pockets.” | Seamless internal contour. Smooth flow with no resistance. |
| Expansion Gap | Requires a 1/16″ (1.6mm) gap at the bottom to allow for thermal expansion. | No gap required; direct metal-to-metal contact. |
| Corrosion Resistance | Prone to crevice corrosion due to the internal gap/recess. | Excellent. Ideal for corrosive, high-temp, and hazardous media. |
| Inspection (NDT) | Difficult to perform Radiography (X-ray). Magnetic Particle/Dye Penetrant only. | Radiography (RT) friendly. Critical for high-pressure safety certification. |
| Unit Price (Fittings) | Higher. Forging process for small sizes is more expensive. | Lower. Mass-produced, especially for standard sizes. |
| Installation Cost | Lower. Faster to align; requires standard welding skills. | Higher. Requires skilled welders, beveling, and more labor time. |
| Best Application | Small diameter, high-pressure lines (Instrument, Hydraulic). | High-pressure, high-temperature, and large-scale industrial pipelines. |
In conclusion, socket weld fittings are not merely connectors but engineered components fundamental to the integrity and efficiency of modern piping systems. Their standardized design, pressure ratings, and proven durability make them the preferred choice for critical service conditions. By guaranteeing leak-tight joints, optimized hydraulic performance, and structural resilience, they safeguard both operational continuity and long-term economic value.
For RAYOUNG, supplying socket weld fittings is more than delivering forged products; it is a commitment to safety, quality, and global engineering standards.
