ASTM A234 Pipe Fittings: WPB, WPC, and Alloy Steel Solutions by Rayoung

When it comes to high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems, the reliability of your fittings is non-negotiable. At Rayoung, we specialize in manufacturing high-performance industrial pipe fittings that meet and exceed global standards. Among the most critical specifications in our catalog is ASTM A234 (ASME SA234)—the industry benchmark for carbon and alloy steel fittings.

What is ASTM A234?

ASTM A234 (ASME SA234) is a standard specification of carbon and alloy steel pipe fittings for moderate and high temperature services. Common use material are ASTM A234 Grade WPB, WPC, WP5, WP9, WP11, WP22 and WP91. It covers the butt-welded pipe fittings of Elbow, Tee, Reducer, Cap, and Cross, and some socket welding, threaded pipe fittings.

Our Supply Range

We offer a comprehensive range of ASTM A234 fittings, ensuring we are a one-stop shop for your project needs.

  • Carbon Steel Grades: ASTM A234 Grade WPB, WPC, WPR.
  • Alloy Steel Grades: ASTM A234 WP1, WP11 (CL1/2/3), WP12 (CL1/3), WP22 (CL1/3), WP5, WP9, and the high-strength WP91 (Type 1/2).
  • Outer Diameter (OD): Seamless and Welded options from 1/2” to 48” (per ASME B16.9).
  • Wall Thickness (Schedule): Full range including SCH 10, SCH 40, SCH STD, SCH 80, SCH XS, SCH 160, and SCH XXS (per ASME B36.10).
  • Pressure Class: Class 150 through Class 2500.
  • Manufacturing Standards: Strict adherence to ASME B16.9, B16.11, MSS-SP-79, 83, 95, and 97.

Manufacturing and Heat Treatment Expertise

Quality in ASTM A234 fittings is determined by the “W” (Weldable) designation and the thermal history of the material. At our HB-Steel facility, we manage heat treatment with surgical precision to optimize grain structure and mechanical properties.

  1. Hot Forming vs. Heat Treatment
For Carbon Steel grades like WPB and WPC, if the fitting is hot-formed between 620°C [1150°F] and 980°C [1800°F], they are typically cooled in still air. However, if forming occurs above 980°C, we perform a full annealing, normalizing, or normalizing and tempering cycle to ensure the material isn’t brittle.
  2. Specialized Large Diameter Controls
For fittings over NPS 12, we maintain strict chemistry controls. Our elbows and tees in this size range feature a carbon content of less than 0.26%, ensuring superior weldability for field installations.
  3. Cold Forming and Stress Relief
Any cold-formed fittings (processed below 620°C) undergo normalizing or stress-relieving at temperatures between 595°C and 690°C. This prevents internal stresses from compromising the pipe’s lifespan.
  4. Fusion Welding Excellence
For fittings produced via fusion welding with a wall thickness over 19mm (3/4 in), Rayoung performs Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) to guarantee the heat-affected zone (HAZ) is as strong as the parent metal.

Why Choose Rayoung Fittings?

Beyond the technical specs, Rayoung stands out for its commitment to “Quality Beyond the Standard.”

Rigorous Testing: All fittings comply with ASTM A960 requirements. We offer hydrostatic testing, Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) upon request.

Wrought Construction: Unlike cast fittings (which fall under ASTM A216/A217), our wrought fittings offer superior grain flow and higher resistance to fatigue.

Full Traceability: Every elbow, tee, and reducer comes with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) according to EN 10204 3.1.

Global Logistics: Based on the HB-Steel infrastructure, we provide secure packaging and efficient shipping for large-scale energy projects worldwide.
