Plate Flange
Plate flanges have a gasket surface that’s in the same area as the bolting circle face. They are commonly used in applications where the mating flange or flanged fitting is made from a casting.
At Rayoung, we offer carbon steel and stainless steel plate flanges in a variety of sizes, thicknesses, and standards, ensuring that we meet your project needs.
Production Description
What Are Plate Flanges?
Plate flanges start as flat sheets of steel. They are usually cut from carbon steel or stainless steel plates. After cutting, workers machine them to exact sizes. This includes drilling the bolt holes and the center opening. Unlike forged flanges, these do not undergo high-pressure shaping. They simply begin as a flat piece of metal.
Since they aren’t forged, these flanges are cheaper to make. The production process is much simpler. Most people weld them directly onto the pipe. This is why they are often called “welded plate flanges.”
These flanges are perfect for low-pressure jobs. You don’t need heavy-duty strength for these systems. They typically handle pressures up to 300 psi. You will commonly see them in water lines, gas pipelines, and general factory setups.

Standards
- ASME ANSI B16.5;
- AWWA C207 (AWWA plate flanges, defined under the AWWA C207 and C228 standards, are widely used for low-pressure waterworks systems. They are typically manufactured from carbon steel or stainless steel, providing solid strength and resistance to corrosion. Available in a range of thicknesses to match various pipe and pressure needs.)
- MSS SP 44; CSA Z245.12; EN1092-1,EN1759-1.;
- DIN2573, DIN2576, DIN2501, DIN2502 (DIN plate flanges are offered in standard pressure ratings like PN10, PN16, and PN25, each engineered to meet specific performance and dimensional guidelines set by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN). These flanges come in different thicknesses to suit system demands and can be customized for nonstandard layouts or special materials.)
- BS1560,BS 4504,BS 10.; AFNOR NF E29-200-1; ISO7005-1; AS2129; JIS B2220
Applications of Plate Flanges
- Low-Pressure Piping Systems
- Municipal Water Pipelines
- Industrial Gas Pipelines
- Ventilation and Exhaust Lines
- Structural Utility Connections

Comparison with Other Flanges
| Flange Type | Made From | Strength | Reletive Cost | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plate Flange | Flat metal plate | Moderate | Low | Low-pressure systems |
| Forged Flange | Forged steel | High | Higher | Pressure applications up to 300 psi in piping systems |
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What’s the difference between a plate flange and a forged flange?
A plate flange is cut from a flat metal plate and then machined, while a forged flange is shaped under high pressure to improve strength. Plate flanges are generally for lower-pressure systems.
Q: Where are plate flanges most often used?
In water pipelines, irrigation systems, low-pressure gas lines, and various industrial applications, cost savings and simplicity are key.
Q: Where are plate flanges not suitable?
They’re generally not used in high-pressure or critical service lines where forged or weld neck flanges are required.
